Repent Before The Gods of Indie Rock

Authors note: While reading this post, please listen to some of the samples I have laid out for you. I can assure that it will help to get my point across.

An acquaintance and I found ourselves in a discussion about the Grammys yesterday. She loves the award show and wanted to know my opinion on the album of the year, seeing as how I “looked like someone who knew something about music” (aw shucks). I had to tell her that I love music… so I DIDN’T watch the Grammys. Let’s just say that after that comment she wasn’t really interested in anything else I had to say.

Record Store Day Preview

My favorite holiday is fast approaching! Record Store Day is this Saturday April 16th. This is the one day out of the year we come together to celebrate our dying local record store. Your local participating record store may have live in store acts throughout the day. Be sure to go out and check to see who is playing. What makes Record Store Day special, besides the live acts, are the special releases.  Bands come together and release a live concert or some rare b – sides. The complete list of releases can be found here. But I’ve gone through the list and picked the best new releases.

Spring Break!

Its that time of year again. Spring break is right around the corner, which for many young people means an epic road trip. This post will be a short play list of suggested driving songs. I’ve also been able to drag up a seldom heard B side from the good old days of Death Cab for Cutie “Spring Break Broke.”

Music The Vander Wey an update

I’ve found a way to post my radio shows to the blog. The link is posted below. This way if you missed the show or need a three hour mix tape, you can download my radio show. A quick heads up though, I will only be able to host the Music The Vander Wey files until I post a new show. Enjoy!

This Friday from six to nine PM I will be hosting Music the Vander Wey. This show is going to be fantastic! Along with the usual fare of new indie rock, I will be hosting a half hour fair well to The White Stripes. I haven’t had time to do a proper send off to one of my favorite bands until now. They announced earlier this year that it will stop making any new music, you can read my previous blog post about it here. Post any requests you might have for the show. I’d love some input!

White Stripes Obituary

The White Stripes

The White Stripes have broken up. Read their touching letter here.

There are few bands that can embody the American brand of rock and roll, but The White Stripes were as close to perfection as I think we may ever get. The band only had two members: Jack White and Meg White. For show and band purposes they were brother and sister. In reality they aren’t. They were married, and in typical rock and roll fashion Jack White took Meg White’s last name. Which is a microcosm of what rock and roll is. Rock is thwarting normal social mores. Rock is going against big business and republicans. Rock by definition cannot be mainstream, like The Dave Matthews Band or what has happened to The Beatles (They are soulless pop). I have always felt that The White Stripes have kept it real.
