The Killers: Runaway

It has been a busy summer. I’ve been neglecting my constant search for new music. Every so often the search is made easy. The Killers have a new album dropping sometime in the fall. Its entitle Battleborn.

2012 A Preview

2011 is nearly behind us. Many other blogs are focused on the past 2011 albums, but not me. 2012 is going to be a great year of indie rock and roll! I’ve compiled a short list of upcoming albums to drool over that should be dropping sometime in 2012.

The Killers New Christmas Single

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a new Christmas single from The Killers. This year’s Christmas single is entitled “The Cowboys’ Christmas Ball.” I have to admit that I haven’t been big on X-Mas music the past couple of years. In fact, last year I didn’t even do a Christmas show on KGLT. I did a anti-Christmas show, just for a breath of fresh air.

Repent Before The Gods of Indie Rock

Authors note: While reading this post, please listen to some of the samples I have laid out for you. I can assure that it will help to get my point across.

An acquaintance and I found ourselves in a discussion about the Grammys yesterday. She loves the award show and wanted to know my opinion on the album of the year, seeing as how I “looked like someone who knew something about music” (aw shucks). I had to tell her that I love music… so I DIDN’T watch the Grammys. Let’s just say that after that comment she wasn’t really interested in anything else I had to say.

Music The Vander Wey’s June Love Song Mix Tape

Normally, I am not all that big on love songs. In fact, most of the time they trigger my natural gag reflex when I hear more than five in a row. But for some reason I am feeling sentimental tonight. Mainly, I suspect, because of this photo I stumbled across on the huffingtonpost.com.

I am going to make a point of not repeating any cliches about photos, but I do strongly believe this is a pretty remarkable photo. No, not because its a rare photo of Canadians rioting over something as lame as hockey. Rather, the image of violence, fire, and danger contrasted with that of unrepentant love. Like any good emo/indie rocker this image was enough to inspire me to make a mix tape. This is a mix tape of some of my favorite love songs. I want to point out that they aren’t bitter love songs or songs about love and the breaking up. Just pure at heart glurpy puppy dog love songs.

Spring Break!

Its that time of year again. Spring break is right around the corner, which for many young people means an epic road trip. This post will be a short play list of suggested driving songs. I’ve also been able to drag up a seldom heard B side from the good old days of Death Cab for Cutie “Spring Break Broke.”

Glurpy Love Songs

Well its that time of year again, Valentines Day is fast approaching. The one day out of the year when corporate America tells you to feel love. The one day out of the year where you are supposed to not be alone. The one day out of the year where you are supposed to compromise your own personal values and end up going home your creepy four foot two stalker. Why? Because no one should be alone on Valentines day. The TV is flooded with mind numbing commercials trying to get desperate guys to buy flowers for that special someone. In order to sell those flowers advertisers have paid testimonials from vaguely attractive women talking about how flowers make them feel “loved.” Every time I get flowers I immediately start to wonder if I am dieing or going to the hospital. Its a get better gift. If you really like someone I have some relationship Do and Do not Dos.

Friday Afternoon Stress Reliever

Its Friday afternoon… and I am stuck inside applying for a job I am over qualified for. Suckfest right? Friday afternoons should be reserved for music, especially a week of mediocrity and lame moral dilemmas. Its time to stop thinking and relieve that pent up anger and stress. After all you’re gonna need that anger and stress just to wake up for Monday morning. It’s time for Friday afternoon rock!!

Brandon Flowers: Flamingo

Brandon Flowers on keys in the Empire Ballroom...

Brandon Flowers

I spent a large part of my summer giddy with excitement over the prospects of Brandon Flowers new solo album. Flamingo was released back in September. My childish excitement was based around the prospect of the voice of The Killers in a new album!

Flamingo is, of course, a tribute to the famous Las Vegas landmark hotel, but in many ways Flamingo is the theme album of Vegas itself. It’s glamorous, fake, and has a little bit of western charm. I loved the opening song which brings some of the more enchanting images I have of Vegas to mind, but it also talks about “waking up in a burned out old Deville”. The entire album shows the discourse that is Las Vegas, which is precisely why I love this album. It’s a fun and doesn’t take itself seriously.
