Codes and Keys: The Verdict
Posted by musicthevanderwey in Alternative, New Releases on May 23, 2011
I have been struggling with the new Death Cab For Cutie album Codes and Keys which will be released on May 25th. I’ve written several blog posts about my trepidation of a new album, (mainly because Death Cab’s last album was god awful and the band has been moving in a new direction since the release of Narrow Stairs.) Codes and Keys does sound quite a bit different from Narrow Stairs in many respects. The songs have more synth and vocals layered throughout the songs, just as promised. However, my first response to the new album was “meh.” There isn’t a single track on the entire album that has blown me away or that changed my opinion of the new direction Death Cab has decided to take. A lot of other reviews and opinions have hailed this album as an example of a band that has evolved and has reached a new pinnacle. Read the rest of this entry »
Death Cab For Cutie Now with Happy Music and Rainbows!

I’m sorry. This is going to be a rage post.
I finished reading this new CNN article on Death Cab’s up coming new album Codes and Keys, which will be released on May 31. This is an explosive article for many reasons, chiefly the admission that Ben Gibbard doesn’t plan on writing any more sad songs. Instead, he feels that he is in a happy place now that he is married to Zoey Deschanel. (Admittedly who wouldn’t be?) Death Cab’s upcoming album will have a different feeling entirely. According to lead singer Ben Gibbard “…and while it sounds like Death Cab, there’s a new spirit of optimism on this disc.” Read the full article here. Warning it is nauseating.
New Deathcab Album First Listen

My good friend and On The Couch founder, T. William Gooch, stumbled upon some live performances of Death Cab for Cutie’s new title track “Codes and Keys.” The lead singer for Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Gibbard, performed this song in San Fransisco. A quick heads up though, this live version should be dramatically different from the album version and should be different from live performances. The album version is reportedly going to have a lot more synth and spacey sounds and less guitar strumming. This live version is just Ben sitting at a piano. The rest of the band isn’t contributing to the title track.
The Second track Ben performed live is from the upcoming Arthur 2.0 soundtrack. It will be interesting to hear what the movie version of this track will sound like.
News Flash! New Radiohead and an Update on Death Cab’s New Album

Lets start off with the big news: Radiohead has a new album, King of Limbs dropping soon – very soon – Saturday soon! You can digital download King of Limbs for $9 on Saturday. There will not be a name your own price deal going on, like with Radiohead‘s previous album, On Rainbows, the price is $9. There will be a collectors vinyl addition coming out in May for $50. The pre-order for that starts Saturday as well. The physical release of the album is scheduled for sometime in May. I love how this album release came out of no where. Normally for major releases like this I sit for months in a state of high anticipation.
