Best Coast The Only Place: Album Of The Summer
Posted by musicthevanderwey in Alternative, Indie Pop, New Releases on June 15, 2012
This post is really a bold prediction. Summer has barely started and already a number of staff writers, here at On The Couch, have voiced an opinion that Best Coast‘s latest and greatest album, The Only Place, is crowned album of the summer!
Album of the summer is traditionally an album that embodies the summer of a particular year. I can remember back to the summer of 2005, Motion City Soundtrack‘s second album was forever jammed into my car’s stereo. 2004 was The Killers’ iconic Hot Fuss. The album has to be great enough so that when you hear it or think about it your mind immediately wonders back in time to a happier place.

Music The Vander Wey’s June Love Song Mix Tape
Posted by musicthevanderwey in Alternative, Emo, Indie Rock, The Cribs, The Killers on June 16, 2011
Normally, I am not all that big on love songs. In fact, most of the time they trigger my natural gag reflex when I hear more than five in a row. But for some reason I am feeling sentimental tonight. Mainly, I suspect, because of this photo I stumbled across on the huffingtonpost.com.
I am going to make a point of not repeating any cliches about photos, but I do strongly believe this is a pretty remarkable photo. No, not because its a rare photo of Canadians rioting over something as lame as hockey. Rather, the image of violence, fire, and danger contrasted with that of unrepentant love. Like any good emo/indie rocker this image was enough to inspire me to make a mix tape. This is a mix tape of some of my favorite love songs. I want to point out that they aren’t bitter love songs or songs about love and the breaking up. Just pure at heart glurpy puppy dog love songs.
Today is Buy Nothing Day

Mondays are the worst day of the M’n F’n week. Lately I haven’t had a problem with them because I rather like my day job, but this week is a little different. Car troubles over the weekend have already made the beginning of the week sort of sour. The one thing that has gotten me to look on the sunny side is “Buy Nothing Day” by The Go! Team, a song that features Bethany Cosentino from Best Coast.
Now Presenting: Best Coast

A good friend ran up to me at my local watering hole. He was filled with that excitement you get when you find a good new band. He told me to stop what I’m doing and listen to Best Coast. Sure enough it panned out well. Best Coast is based out of L.A. They have one album out entitled Crazy For You, which focuses on the seldom heard genre of surf rock. Their songs are totally cheesy and sweet, but most importantly they are catchy. Surf rock might be one of the least appealing concepts to me, but Best Coast is able to turn around the fifties and sixties wholesome surf rock movies
and bands into a commentary on today’s society. Best Coast makes the Beach Boys sound like a bunch of dried and shrived beach balls stuck in a decade that only happened in their own minds.
