I have been told numerous times from people in the music business that Ben Gibbard is one of the nicest guys on the face of the planet. But in recent years, he had broken my heart and killed off most of my love for his main band Death Cab For Cutie. I have written extensively about my angst and heart-break HERE.
I know that rating favorite albums or songs can be a childish and silly endeavor because when it all boils down the only thing that matters is that you love what you are listening to. Although, sometimes I think it can be a useful tool to get your thoughts and feelings straight on an album. Trying to pick a favorite song is a fickle thing. Favorite songs seem to change with the day, mood, season, weather, and attitude towards life so why bother?
I have made a terrible mistake. Every once in a while an album or band slips beneath and goes unnoticed by the staff writers here at On The Couch. Its pretty embarrassing when that happens. Granted, not as embarrassing as getting caught naked after getting out of a cold pool. But it is particularly shameful when a band I have listed under “Staff Favorites” has a major album release and it goes un-listened to for nearly a year. Styrofoam released Disco Synthesizers & Daily Tranquilizers way back in last October. I somehow missed it. I must have been distracted by something. Perhaps pretty fall foliage or a dog with a puffy tail.
The Wooden Birds have unveiled the title track of their upcoming album, Two Matchsticks. The group is fronted by Andrew Kenny, formerly of the American Analog Set, and backed up by Leslie Sisson (vocalist/guitarist), Sean Haskins (drummer), and Matt Pond (guitarist). Kenny has also done guest work with Album Leaf, Her Space Holiday, Styrofoam, Ola Podrida, Arthur & Yu, and Broken Social Scene.
After hearing Ramona Falls is working on a new album and now word that The Wooden Birds will be dropping Two Matchsticks in June, it seems sophomore albums are all the rage. Oh yeah and this post is officially On the Couch’s 100th, I can’t believe we’ve already hit this milestone.
