I, The Impressed

Isn’t it great when you come across a CD from a band you’ve heard one or two songs from, and it ends up being friggin’ amazing? Although rare, this does occur every once in a while. Fortunately for me, it happened just a little bit ago, and because of this rare occurrence, I have decided to write on the guys the pulled it off.

I, give you: I, The Breather

I, The Breather is another one of those brutal metal bands that I love to fall in love with. The very first song on the CD will tell you exactly why, and I will post that video at the bottom of this blog.

Memphis May Fire

First of all, let me apologize for taking so long to write a new blog. I know it’s been a while, but truth is, I haven’t heard anyone lately that’s inspired me enough to write anything about them… until now.

Allow me to introduce, Memphis May Fire.

I had never heard of this band up until last week while I was searching through iTunes, but when I previewed the very first song on their new album, “The Hollow”, I knew I had to get it. Although I was a little hesitant at first, due to all the other bands I’ve gotten this feeling from that have just completely let me down, I followed through and got the album. Since I got it, it’s been the only thing I’ve been listening to, and it is better than what I expected. From my knowledge, these guys have been around since about 2006ish, and I am pretty pissed I haven’t heard of them until now.

Asking Alexandria… The End.

Through the years of music that I have lived to hear and experience, there are many bands that are able to make me click the “repeat” button. In my more recent years, though, with my new tastes in music and such, there has only been a handful that I could never get away from if I tried. Asking Alexandria happens to be one of them.

Asking Alexandria is a heavy metal band that hails from North Yorkshire, England, with the appearance of an 80’s hair band, and more talent than 95% of most mainstream artists out there. They were actually the very first band that I heard to start mixing a little bit of electronic music into their metal routine, and they’ve continued to make it work. I have been absolutely in love with Asking Alexandria since the very first time I heard them, and when I bought Stand Up and Scream in September, 2009 (their first full length studio album) I couldn’t believe the amount of talent within the band. The album had some of the sickest breakdowns, guitar riffs, and double pedal goodness that I had ever heard.  One thing I really enjoy about Asking Alexandria is that their screamer, Danny Worsnop, is also the singer, which is unique compared to many other bands that I know of.

D.R.U.G.S are good, mkayyy.

Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows (D.R.U.G.S) is a brand new band led by the one and only, Craig Owens, who is most well known for being the front man for the band Chiodos. With that sentence said, I know that half of you are now moving your mouse towards the “X”, but I urge you to keep on reading.

In all honesty, I used to be Anti-Craig Owens. I could not stand him in Chiodos, and I didn’t buy, nor even download a single album, so the fact that I’m writing a blog about one of his bands blows me away as well. This band is not anything like the typical Craig Owens, with his new crew under a new name, D.R.U.G.S has completely taken me by surprise, and I have fallen in love.

A Soundtrack to the Life of a Carnie

I know it has been far to long since my last post, but I would hope that you would excuse my absence due to a busy work month and illness. In the time that I have been away from “the couch” I have picked up some new tunes and did some reading. In fact one of the books I am reading is the inspiration for this post.

In the latter half of the book, the author describes his drive across Montana during August of 2003. He mentions the oppressive heat on the wide open eastern plains and then the thick smoke that surrounded Missoula, Mont. That summer the western part of the state was ablaze and the rest of the region was covered with a think ash haze.  The date and descriptions immediately took me back to that summer because that was the year I spent two months as a “carnie”. Pause for effect… Well I didn’t really work for the carnival but I did work for a concessions company that traveled to county and state fairs. I mostly flipped burgers, drank soda, and burned things in the deep-fat-fryer.

I worked in something similar to this

How does this all relate to music?? During my time between fair gigs I was able to get tickets to a Deftones concert and it was the one thing that I could to look forward to, other than the final stop of the “carnie” train. Before you decide this another blog about the Deftones, I ask you to keep reading because in the end I never was able to see said band live that summer. After driving 3 hours with three other friends we arrived at the venue only to find that the show had been canceled due to some injury of one the members.

The devastation was tough to take but I was able to get through the rest of the summer with the help of three newly found sources (they were newly found to me anyway). To this day these three bands, namely these three songs, are the soundtrack of that summer I spent grease soaked, soda covered, and smelling of stale beer (I guess I really was a “carnie”). It is an experience that I would never advise another FRIEND to do, but is also a time in my life that I will never regret.

Oddly enough all of these songs are self-destructive… but then again when your 21 and a “carnie” most of your music is heavily influenced by self-destruction.

1. Taking Back Sunday – Cute without the “e” (Cut from the Team)

* As a note the only “official” videos I could find of this song were heavily censored. I guess Victory Records now has a problem with the word gun. Also, the photo that is used in the vid is of the newer lineup of band members. In 2003, guitarist/vocalist John Nolan and bassist Shaun Cooper left the band (both of whom played on the original recording) and were replaced by Fred Mascherino guitar/vocals and Matt Rubano on bass (at least according to Wikipedia).

2. Finch – What it is to Burn

* This is the title track of their debut album. It is to date the only album from said band that I have found worth owning

3.  The Used – The Taste of Ink

* I found that this one track sounds completely different from any other on the debut album from the Orem, Utah based group. I think I wanted to like them more than I really did because they were from the Salt Lake City area. I was hoping for a musical revolution to happen right under the noses of the high priests of the mormon church, but in the end The Used failed to stand out and this is the only song that reminds me they were once relevant.

Cellular phones sending out DEFTONES

Chino Moreno the frontman of the Deftones

Being a fan of a band should be like being a fan of a sports team. Many times in the world of musical fandom we turn on musicians as soon as the group kicks out one bad album. Sometimes we’ll stick around for two, but that doesn’t happen often. We should continue to be fans no matter what happens, even if a band changes their sound completely and you wonder why you even liked them at all, because at one time there was a connection and we should never forget that moment.

I am guilty of flip-flopping on most bands that catch my eye, but there has been one group that I have never given up on, even after two subpar albums. The collection of musicians known as the Deftones has been apart of my musical pallet since I was 16 years old. This week it was announced the release their sixth album Diamond Eyes will be May 18th, and again I find myself searching to find any way to get their tones in my ears.

There were three different releases of White Pony, this is the limited "black" album

One might ask why I still look forward to listening to something new from a band who’s last two albums did nothing to improve my musical collection. I would tell them that once a band has made one master piece, you will wait for eternity to see of they can do it again. This masterpiece I speak of is the White Pony album that was released in June of 2000. To this day it remains my favorite COMPLETE album of all time. From track one “Feiticeira” to track 12 “The Boy’s Republic” there isn’t a moment on the album that doesn’t capture my complete attention.

It is true that “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” or “My Own Summer (Shove it)” might be the two best songs ever released by the Deftones, but I don’t think that anyone would argue that Around the Fur is in the same class as White Pony.

Most of my feelings are fueled by nostalgia but isn’t that what makes all older music great? We love associating it with a time in our lives where we thought we had it easier.

Below is a reminder of some of the great songs that came off that legendary album.

“Digital Bath”

“Change (In the House of Flies)”

“Street Carp”

Get well soon Chi
