It’s good to get my hands on some new music, particularly music that is very difficult to categorize. Such as Other People’s Problems the first full length album from the English indie rock group Breton. I really dig it.
Other People’s Problems exists in the ether somewhere between indie rock, with some strong punk elements, and electronic dance. It is really remarkable. Breton offers up the guitar that I need and love, with real drums – not soulless drum machines – even with some brilliant violin work. I have a huge soft spot for any rock group that uses a violin. Instantly they become seriously cool.
The punk element deserves some explanation. The subject matter is punk, but more importantly, they sing off microphone which has a number of effects. First, it distorts the lead vocals. Secondly, it draws the focus off of the lyrics and onto the musical instruments and the amazing beats. My god the beats are sick. I find myself rocking out one moment in my car, then the next moment I am doing the full body dance… while sitting. Amazing stuff.
Check out my current favorite track “Jostle” and another great one “The Commission.”
