Best Coast The Only Place: Album Of The Summer

This post is really a bold prediction. Summer has barely started and already a number of staff writers, here at On The Couch, have voiced an opinion that Best Coast‘s latest and greatest album, The Only Place,  is crowned album of the summer!

Album of the summer is traditionally an album that embodies the summer of a particular year. I can remember back to the summer of 2005, Motion City Soundtrack‘s second album was forever jammed into my car’s stereo. 2004 was The Killers’ iconic Hot Fuss. The album has to be great enough so that when you hear it or think about it your mind immediately wonders back in time to a happier place.

The Only Place is full of summer time tunes and rhythms, mixed with wistful love songs, and beautiful lyrics about home. Has a different feel from Best Coast‘s previous album, Crazy For You, which was 110% surf rock. The Only Place is much more of an indie rock album. One thing that kept popping to my head was that this album has a sort of county-ish feel to it. I couldn’t figure out why I thought that since there isn’t any god awful steel guitar or obnoxious twang and whatever the hell “honky tonk” is. I finally did figure it out. The Only Place has slower tempos and beats. But the number one factor that contributes to this phantom country quality has got to be the lyrics about home and lost love.

Best Coast really out did themselves this time. The Only Place is enchanting and will make you swoon.
