For many die-hard fans of The Black Keys this might be old news, but for everyone else, a new album dropping on December 6th, entitled El Camino. It’s hard to imagine that it’s already been a year and a half since Brothers dropped. I guess time flies when you are having fun.
I absolutely adored Brothers. In fact it was my album of the year for 2010. But I have to admit I wasn’t completely sold on The Black Keys until that album. I am always a little leery of bands that only consist of a duo. Most of the time, bands that are only two members end up giving you about half the sound of a proper band. I feel like I am getting stiffed when I buy an album from a two person band. But not with The Black Keys. They are able to produce more sound and awesomeness than an indie rock orchestra.
The one thing I want to caution the indie rock listening public is that it’s really hard to call The Black Keys indie rock. They may embody the spirit of hipster snarky indie rock, they are certainly the cutting edge when it comes to new rock and roll stylings. But any band that lends so many of their songs to advertisements and corporate shenanigans has had a portion of their soul stolen. It hurts but sometimes to have an indie band go rogue on you, but as long as you are aware that they might have turned into corporate lackeys. Thankfully, The Black Keys are signed onto a semi – decent indie record label V2 Records.
Good news! The Black Keys have released their first single for the upcoming album El Camino entitled “Lonely Boy.” Give it a listen. I only wish I could dance half as well as this guy.
