Just in Time for Halloween: The Pack a.d.

There are only two things that scare me in this world, nuclear holocaust and… hard rocking female duos. Ok, so I’m not scared of females who rock, especially duos, but they definitely give me a charge of adrenalin like you get when you’re scared. The latest group to get my heart pounding is Vancouver’s own The Pack a.d..

Maya Miller and Becky Black have been cranking out great rock since 2006, and released their fourth full album last month, Unpersons. I have to tell you each one of the tracks has a pulse pounding beat that will make you subconsciously bob your head, if not all out “head bang”. Plus to get you into the Halloween spirit they released a video for “Haunt You” last week.

New Black Keys Album: El Camino

For many die-hard fans of The Black Keys this might be old news, but for everyone else, the duo has a new album dropping on December 6th, entitled El Camino. It’s hard to imagine that it’s already been a year and a half since Brothers dropped. I guess time flies when you are having fun.

Smile Like A Friend

Come November I will have gone without TV for six months. In all honesty I cannot believe I have lasted this long. Part of me doesn’t want to admit how much I missed it the first couple of months, just because it is so embarrassing. Also, with online streaming I still can get my fix of my favorite shows, but it definitely has its challenges. The one benefit of no TV is that I am reading more, still not as much as I should but that is for another blog post.

Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer

The reason I bring up my lack of TV, is that it has caused me to go back through and watch more movies from my collection and has also forced me to add to my library. My latest buy was The Venture Bros. Season 4 Vol. I & II. I have really enjoyed re-watching the episodes and I especially love hearing Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick’s commentary. The other night I listened to their commentary on “Operation P.R.O.M.” and they talked about how great it was to get to use Pulp’s “Like A Friend” in the episode.

Music the Vander Wey’s Halloween Mix

It is my favorite time of year and its my favorite holiday Halloween. There is nothing better than celebrating fear and death than with an indie rock mix! Last year performed my best radio show on Halloween. Three hours of nothing but inspired indie rock terror. It was fantastic. This mix is a boiled down version, nine tracks of epic indie rock goodness.

Click the skull to hear the mix!

Click me... if you dare!

1. Arctic Monkeys – Perhaps Vampires is a Bit Strong but…
2. Alkaline Trio – Draculina
3. The Cribs – Housewife
4. Phantom Planet – The Living Dead
5. Aquabats – Fashion Zombies!
6. Does It Offend You, Yeah?? – We are the Dead
7. Matchbook Romance – Monsters
8. Margot & The Nuclear So & So’s – Tiny Vampire Robot
9. Porcupine Tree – I Drive the Hearse

Black Star, Yasiin Bey, and The Colbert Report

Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star

Wow you spend a couple of weeks away from watching The Colbert Report and great things happen. Apparently Mos Def has changed his performance name to Yasiin Bey and made an appearance with Talib Kweli to promote some new music as the duo Black Star.

First off I am not happy to hear that Mos Def is using a new moniker, but he tends to be a little excentric and that is why I like him. Also, if you haven’t seen Talib Kweli on The Colbert Report before, I suggest you find his interviews because he and Colbert have a great back-and-forth. Colbert with hip-hop artist in general is always great.

New My Brightest Diamond

It is about time for something completely different. The past month or so I’ve been rocking out to scotch rock or some electro pop, that all changed with All Things Will Unwind. My Brightest Diamond had their third full length album dropped this week entitled All Things Will Unwind. You might recognize the lead singer, as she is the queen in The Decemberists Hazards of Love (she was the good female singer).

The Roots Leak First Track from Upcoming LP

Author’s Note: If you have read my posts before you will know that I am a huge fan of The Roots, with today’s news I am one of the happiest music fans in the world right now. Normally I don’t get excited for “concept albums” but anytime we can get new and original work from The Roots I am willing to give it 10 to 15 listens before I make up my mind.

The Roots are releasing another album, undon, on Dec. 6th. This new project has sort of a refreshing twist, as it is a novel with a beat. The tracks are chapters in the short life of Redford Stephens (1974-1999). From what I understand the songs work back from his death to his birth.

New Cranberries Album: Roses

After nearly a decade without a new album, the legendary Irish rock band, The Cranberries are coming back in a big way; with a release of their sixth full length album entitled Roses. The new album is due out on February 14th.

Personally, The Cranberries were the first rock group I ever loved. It started back in first grade when I heard their ever popular yet disliked song “Zombie.” That song got stuck… in my head for weeks. I even have a journal entry from first grade chronically this event. Since then I was a diehard Cranberries fan. In high school, I listened to “Analyse” about a ba-jillion times. More embarrassingly, Dolores O’Riordan might be the largest reason why I was able to sing all the soprano parts in middleschool choir. Not tenor… but soprano.

We Were Promised Jetpacks: In The Pit of the Stomach Review

Just last week I was raving about We Were Promised Jetpacks. But that was mainly from listening to their old album These Four Walls and their latest EP, but now I got my hands on their latest album In the Pit Of the Stomach. Again, I am blown away by this Scottish rock group. I have listened to this album an embarrassing number of times.
