Weekends are Awesome…
Posted by T. William Gooch in Hip-Hop, Mixtapes on April 30, 2011
Holy crap it seems like forever since we last posted some hip-hop on the blog. Spring in rolling in it is time for some feel good music for sure and I think I have just the suggestion for our readers.
I first heard XV about a year and a half ago, when I downloaded his 30 Minute Layover mixtape. It was kind of weird because I was listening to Chiddy Bang’s Air Swell mixtape and both have a lot of references to the culture of air travel. So it felt like everything I was listening to was talking about layovers, single serving drinks, and neck pillows. After a couple of months of listening I was hooked on XV’s style. He does a great job of using witty references to nerd culture at the same time keeping his edge.
T. Will’s Soap Box: Time to Make Some Room for Empathy
Posted by T. William Gooch in Uncategorized on April 27, 2011
It isn’t often anymore that I am completely blindsided by happenings in the world. This could be attributed to the fact that not much hits close to home. Don’t get me wrong I feel empathy for those who are struck by tragedy, but that type of news takes up a larger part of my conscience when it happens to some in my life.
I was recently made aware that one of my favorite people in the world had become a victim of a camera phone. I cannot and will not speak of the specifics, but with the amount of times this happens you should be able to put the pieces together. It is the frequency of these incidents that I am writing this blog post.
As technology becomes more and more seamless in our lives, we are finding that our every move is being recorded by somebody or something. Apple has recently come under fire for logging GPS positions of iPad and iPhones users. Nothing scares me more than a corporation having access to where I go everyday, mostly because it is embarrassing how much time I spend in my own house. These questions will have to be answered by consumer watchdog groups, what I want to talk about is our society’s lack of empathy for other human beings.
Now Presenting: The Get Up Kids
Posted by musicthevanderwey in Alternative, Emo, Indie Rock on April 27, 2011
In recent days I’ve been jamming out to the new Get Up Kids album There Are Rules. I’ve been listening to the Get Up Kids for quite a while now. Their last EP Simple Science was pretty damn good, but this album has me coming back for more. This is a great album because it has it all. There Are Rules has slow songs, fast songs, poppy songs, and sad songs. That variation puts a big smile on my face and keeps me coming back for more. My two favorite songs are “Automatic” and “Rally ‘Round The Fool.”
Death Cab For Cutie Now with Happy Music and Rainbows!

I’m sorry. This is going to be a rage post.
I finished reading this new CNN article on Death Cab’s up coming new album Codes and Keys, which will be released on May 31. This is an explosive article for many reasons, chiefly the admission that Ben Gibbard doesn’t plan on writing any more sad songs. Instead, he feels that he is in a happy place now that he is married to Zoey Deschanel. (Admittedly who wouldn’t be?) Death Cab’s upcoming album will have a different feeling entirely. According to lead singer Ben Gibbard “…and while it sounds like Death Cab, there’s a new spirit of optimism on this disc.” Read the full article here. Warning it is nauseating.
Getting to know Arcand
Posted by T. William Gooch in Alternative, Folk Rock, Indie Rock on April 21, 2011
So in my browsing of the internets I ran across a Tumblr blog a couple of months ago and found that the artist running it was releasing his original work for free via blog updates. After following the updates for a while I became very interested in who the artist was and figured the best way to get to know him would be to ask a whole lot of questions.
Below you will find a Q&A I did with Arcand (Bryan Osuszek) of Toronto, Canada. I think you’ll enjoy his answers along with his music.
Now Presenting: Funeral Party
Posted by musicthevanderwey in Alternative, Indie Rock, New Releases on April 19, 2011
If you are tired of the same playlist on your iPod or have you heard every song on the radio? Good news! The new Funeral Party album The Golden Age of Knowhere will get your head bobbing. I stumbled onto the band, while I was splayed out on my couch watching The Late Show with David Letterman. I don’t know who does the music booking for The Late Show but they consistently have some really good acts on the show.
The strange thing is that normally when an act appears on a late night talk show they usually sound pretty amazing. Then you hear the band for the second time during normal business hours and they have somehow lost all of their appeal. I think it might have something to do with how tired your brain is at that time of night. Thankfully, Funeral Party sounds even better the second time round.
Franz Ferdinand Covers EP – First Listen
Posted by musicthevanderwey in Alternative, Electro Pop, Electronic, Indie Rock, Remix on April 17, 2011
On April 16th, Record Store Day, Franz Ferdinand Covers EP was released on vinyl. My local record store didn’t have a copy in stock, which was quite enraging. Apparently this is a fairly hard to come by limited “regional” release. But I was able to track down some of the tracks to share with you. These are some of my favorites. Enjoy!
Record Store Day Preview

My favorite holiday is fast approaching! Record Store Day is this Saturday April 16th. This is the one day out of the year we come together to celebrate our dying local record store. Your local participating record store may have live in store acts throughout the day. Be sure to go out and check to see who is playing. What makes Record Store Day special, besides the live acts, are the special releases. Bands come together and release a live concert or some rare b – sides. The complete list of releases can be found here. But I’ve gone through the list and picked the best new releases.
Kate Micucci – A Comedic and Musical Voice to Know
Posted by T. William Gooch in Alternative, Comedy on April 14, 2011
Recently I have found that my admiration for artists who have multiple talents has been taken to a new level. This may have been sparked by Donald Glover’s work as an actor, comedian, and hip-hop artist. My latest focal point is Kate Micucci, she has been a working actress for 10 years and though you may not remember her name right off you definitely have seen her before.
I would think her most memorable role was as Stephanie Gooch (yes I did find it very funny that a character on a sitcom used my last name) on the NBC sitcom Scrubs. She currently has a reoccurring role on Fox’s Raising Hope. To say she has a unique look would be an understatement, in fact whenever I see her on-screen I can’t help but to follow her every move because she is so intriguing.
I am not writing this blog to discuss Kate’s look though, I want to talk about her music. She has been writing and performing music as a solo act and with Riki Lindhome as part of the duo Garfunkel and Oats. No matter the project she is working on the music is always fresh, creative, and witty.
